SAN is high
speed, high-bandwidth network that logically
connects storage servers. The SAN is implemented
on loosely coupled model, which permits
all servers in an environment to have extremely
fast and unrestricted access to storage-based
information, without a permanent physical
connection.
Depending on the implementation, several
different components can be used to build
SAN topologies. SAN consist of components
such as storage subsystems, storage devices,
and server systems that attached to a Fibre
Channel network using Fibre Channel adapters.
Different types of interconnect entities
allow Fibre Channel networks of varying
scale to be build. In smaller SAN environments
Fibre Channel arbitrated loop topologies
employ hub and bridge devices. As SANs increase
in the size and complexity necessary to
address flexibility and availability, Fibre
Channel switches may be introduced.
